Die Geisterstunde beginnt nicht um 0 Uhr nachts, so wie alle denken, sie beginnt um 3 Uhr morgens! Waisenkind Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) weiß das, denn sie kann in ihrem Kinderheim nicht schlafen und geht deswegen nachts auf Streifzug. Dabei beobachtet sie eines Morgens, wie eine über sieben Meter große Gestalt eine umgefallene Mülltonne wieder aufstellt – und wird von dem fremden, gigantisch großen Mann alsbald ins Reich der Riesen verschleppt. Zum Glück für Sophie ist sie in Obhut des Big Friendly Giant geraten, der ihr nichts Böses will, sondern sie stattdessen lieber auf Traumjagd mitnimmt. Doch es gibt noch andere Riesen, die sind größer als der BFG und die fressen Menschen. Sophie und ihr neuer Freund schmieden also einen Plan – der hat mit dem Buckingham Palace und der Königin von England (Penelope Wilton) zu tun...
